Arjī---

Uprānta: I am your long-time servant, 72 years old, who has been living on your salt and water.2 I have in mind [now] to report (lit. request) to you what I am able to understand [from your horoscope]. I looked at [the current planets and your birth horoscope], Dubala Pādhyā, a Gorkhālī 80 years old who is an old and close [friend of mine], having told me to do so and present [the reading to you]. [There] are planets in all four kendras,3 in the arrangement (yoga) [called] catussāgara.4 [in the birth horoscope of lord] ---5 . This arrangement applies also to you. The position of the planets on [your] birth horoscope has been sent [to you]. One of your planetary aspects improved when the 24th day of Śrāvaṇa passed. [Further,] one [other] planetary aspect will become better when the 25th day of Caitra passes. All [your] undertakings will attain their goal, according to the dinapramāṇa calculation. I am [your] servant [and have] reported [the situation] to the extent that [I] am able to understand it. Your kindness in excusing any discrepancies will be needed. Auspiciousness.

Hundreds and thousands of auspicious blessings as uttered in the four Vedas from [your] servant [and] well-wisher Kṛṣṇānanda Lohanī.

Commentary

The identity of the author of the present document, Kṛṣṇānanda Lohanī, is uncertain. One possible candidate is a man of that name who is mentioned as a subbā in the Judicial Regulations of King Gīrvāṇa issued in 1806 and is ordered to enforce the regulations laid down in the region west of the Kanaka and Tista rivers and east of the Mahakali River (see M. C. Regmi 1971: 128).

Notes

1. The manuscript number was added in the top right margin by a second hand. []

2. The underlying meaning of this sentence is: Your servant has been faithful to you for 72 years. []

3. The 1872 Monier-Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary defines kendra as "the distance of a planet from the first point of its orbit in the fourth, seventh, or tenth degree; it is variously applied in composition, as patana-kendram, argument of the latitude; dvitīya-kendram, the distance of the higher apsis of a planet in any point of its orbit; śīghra-kendram". []

4. The term yoga here refers to a certain special arrangement which either adds strength to the horoscope or removes vitality from it. A yoga is formed by more than one planet. The nature of a planet is of three types, viz., benefic, malefic and neutral. According to B. V. Raman (2002: 2-3) and 28) the catussagarayoga comes about when all four kendras are occupied by planets. A person who has such a constellation will earn a good reputation, be the equal of a ruler, and have a long and prosperous life. []

5. Here "Venerable Rāmajyū", written above the main text, is to be added. []
